Team Proto's Winter Walker Concept Drawing 6
All in one walker whose detachable legs can be used as a walking stick or crutches with relevant attachments. |
Pugh Matrix Selection for Walker's Frame Type
Pugh Matrix results for the 4 types of frames highlighted from the 6 generated concepts. Custom fixed frame was selected based on the results. |
Scoring System Selection for Walker's Attachments
A scoring system was used to rank the top 6 attachments in relation to important marking criteria like cost, innovation and ease of manufacture. |
Example of a 3D Printed Joint for the Selected Custom Fixed Frame
Standard aluminium tubes and custom 3D printed joints will be used to form the walker frame. The joints resemble the key clamps used in industrial handrails. |
3D Model of the Custom Fixed Frame
A first draft of the custom fixed frame that Team Proto has selected. This model is currently under development and will include all attachments in the future. |
High Level Design Sketch of the Detachable Walking Stick Attachment
One of multiple sketches of the detachable stick. The detachable walking stick will form one of the legs of the walker frame and will include an easy detachable mechanism, |
High Level Design Sketch of the Foldable Seat Attachment
One of multiple sketches of the foldable seat. The folding seat will be attached to one of the horizontal cross members of the walker frame and will include simple hinges to allow the seat to be lifted and folded. |
High Level Design Sketch of the Electric Heated Grips
The electric heated grips will be developed by using off the shelf electrically heated rubber pads to form the hand grips the rechargable battery will be placed within one of the top tubes of the frame. |
High Level Design Sketch of the Detachable Mini Snow Plows
The detachable mini snow plows will be attached to the wheel axles of the frame and will include a simple pull mechanism to allow the snow plows to be detached. |
High Level Design Sketch of the Stud Feet
The stud feet will be 3D printed and will be attached to the standard rubber ferrules which exist on standard walking frames. Rotatable wheels will be attached to the front two legs via a bolt and locking nut. |
3D Model of Winter Walker Finalised
The following model shows how the Charlie's Winter will like with all the 6 attachments! |

3D Model of Rollable Seat Attachment
A demonstration of how the rollable seat attachment will look like. |
Phase 3: Prototype Completion
Phase 4: Media Development
Team Proto's Promotional Poster for Charlie's Winter Walker
Team Proto produced an A3 sized poster to showcase Charlie's Winter Walker which will be distributed during the team's outreach visits. |
Team Proto's Promotional Video for Charlie's Winter Walker
Team Proto produced a short and engaging video as part of Primary Engineer's Christmas Campaign with an an intention to promote awareness and interest of the SESLA Competition. |
Team Proto's 3D Printing Demonstration Video
The group used this video to explain the 3D printing manufacturing technique to primary school students during visits; it can also be found on our Youtube channel. |
Presentation for Primary Schools
Team Proto's Powerpoint presentation for all primary school visits. |
Phase 5: Presentations
Cromarty Primary School Outreach Visit
Team Proto visited Cromarty Primary School near Inverness to meet Charlie and share our designs for his Winter Walker. Team Proto presented to the entire school at their morning assembly and to Charlie's class which the students really enjoyed. |
Client Meeting
Team Proto met with Charlie and hiss parents and discussed designs for Charlie's Winter Walker over a nice cup of tea and biscuits. Charlie was thrilled to hear how Team Proto was going above and beyond by developing his idea further. Charlie requested for the frame to be foldable and have it painted fluorescent green. |
St Barbara Primary School Visit
Team Proto had a great time presenting to various year groups and conducting a fun design challenge with P4, P5, P6 and P7 year groups. |
Lady of the Missions Primary School Visit
Team Proto greatly enjoyed an interesting Q/A session with primary school students in the Southside of Glasgow. |
Quarry Brae Primary School Visit
Quarry Brae was a unique opportunity for Team Proto to present to all year groups at the morning assembly to mark the start of the British Science Week the school was celebrating. |
SESLA Presentation
This was the capstone for the project and a culmination of all the team's effort to create Charlie's idea into functioning prototype. A testimony to what imagination and engineering can do together. Nothing is impossible. |
